JWC 2011-2012 Charitable Partner:  The Thomas Merton Family Center

JWC is excited to welcome The Thomas Merton Family Center as our 2011 charitable partner.  The Thomas Merton Family Center was selected as the club's charitable partner in April 2011 over more than a dozen other local charitable organizations who submitted applications to become the JWC's charitable partner and to receive funds from the club's biggest fundraiser, "A Visit to Santa's House".

Who is The Thomas Merton Family Center?
Located in Bridgeport, CT, The Thomas Merton Family Center provides service for young families each weekday.  Its goals are to strengthen the families through parent education, creative play activities for parents and their pre-school aged children and also to identify developmental delays in the children.  Breakfast and lunch are served daily.  The Family Center serves about 320 people a year with an average of 25 people a day.

How will the JWC Partner with The Thomas Merton Family Center?
The greatest need of the Thomas Merton Family Center is its most basic need: funding for feeding the women and children that visit the Family Center each day.  The Family Center believes that all of the skills building work that they do is contingent on its ability to provide its families with a good breakfast and lunch each day. Therefore, the donation that the JWC plans to make of the proceeds from our Santa's House fundraiser in December would first be used by the Family Center to fund its meal program.

Beyond funding for its meal program, the JWC also plans to support the Family Center's need to help its young mothers and children, potentially through Diaper Drives and the donation of Birthday Boxes - a "birthday in a box" for the children in its pre-school programs.  As for involvement by the Family Center in JWC activities, we are discussing ways that the Family Center can be part of the upcoming Santa's House fundraiser.

These are just a few of the ways that the JWC hopes to interact with The Thomas Merton Family Center during the course of 2011.  We are very excited about the opportunity to work with the Center this year and to help them provide some of their worthwhile programs!
